Do people still play premium maps?

    Posted: 22 Dec 2019 06:26 AM PST

Thinking of buying battlefield 4 on sale, but not sure if the premium edition is worth it. What's the situation like? Is the premium player-base still active? Would greatly appreciate your advice!

Secret laser painting tips - how to skip the frustration and help your team, and yourself!

    Posted: 21 Dec 2019 10:09 PM PST

Laser painting can be frustrating, but when done right, you can literally turn around entire games for your team. Good laser painting can immobilize tanks and cripple helis from behind cover (I'll explain that trick in a moment). Here's some uncommon tips for the 3 painting gadgets. I've had great games using the SOFLAM and even the SUAV seriously. Here's how to use them to their full potential.

PLD: The PLD is the easiest and most reliable of the laser painters. However, it is also the most dangerous as you are exposed. With one tip and proper positioning (read: literally any high ground), the PLD becomes a tank's worst nightmare.

    • Duck in and out of cover while you paint. Laser paints, unlike regular locks, DO NOT fail the moment the target disappears. This is BIG! Why? This feature lets you lock targets and be hidden half the time. By ducking in and out of cover, it becomes much harder for them to shoot you. Combine this with the next tip for even more success.
    • Camp high ground. Land vehicles don't stand a chance if you combine this with the above tip. Even if they can aim that high, they can't deal splash damage to you.
    • If those two tips aren't enough, or if you're forced to lock from a bad spot, use smoke grenades. Nobody can see through smoke, but you can lock through smoke.

These tips let you hold a lock for MUCH longer, buying your team time to pull their shit together and fire at the diamond. If you stay alive for long enough, even the worst of teams will be able to help you out. But while we're on the topic of teamwork,

    • Frequently yell at your team to equip the JAV/SRAW/TOW/etc. People read chat. If you do this, even the dumbest teams will eventually help out. You can't see laser diamonds if you have an RPG, even if you're in a vehicle with a compatible loadout.
    • Friend anyone who's nice enough to help. Join BF4-related discords and msg them before playing. The fun never ends when you have a dedicated engineer and a support buddy.

If you still don't enjoy helping your team, know that you can help yourself with the PLD. It acts as midranged binoculars (press T to zoom) and as a rangefinder for your sniper.

SOFLAM: This one's really misunderstood. Stop placing this one near yourself when you could just use the PLD. The SOFLAM takes the best parts of the "camping sniper" lifestyle but frees you up to play like normal, or even laser paint for yourself.

    • Place the SOFLAM in the best damn camping spot you can find. Don't worry, PTFO-people, the SOFLAM does all the camping for you while you're free to play normally.
    • Place the SOFLAM high up, ideally so high that tanks can't look at it. The tops of Golmud Railway's power lines are a nasty example that have earned me many kills.
    • Start painting! If you want to help yourself and your team at the same time, find a TOW launcher. Get a target, switch and fire a TOW at the diamond, then switch back to maintain the lock. Enjoy your infinite supply of death from afar.
    • The SOFLAM can be used like a MAV. If you put it in good spot, you can spot enemies near you or the objective you plan to attack.
    • Make your SOFLAM live longer: Don't paint targets at close range, especially helis. Point the SOFLAM away when you're done: It always stays on and constantly shows itself with a bright laser and lock-on tone.

BONUS: The SOFLAM in a tank/LAVs gunner seat comes with FLIR vision when you right click. You can run 3x zoom and FLIR (from the SOFLAM) to get the best of both worlds. There's basically no reason NOT to use the SOFLAM on LAVs since every driver uses the TOW.

SUAV: The most misunderstood of them all. This "troll weapon" is deadly, in theory. The tiny SUAV is almost impossible to shoot dead, unlike the PLD or SOFLAM. It's speed and flight allows it to chase aircraft and paint tanks from above, making it much harder to escape locks.

But here's the problem. The SUAV doesn't last long AT ALL. The SUAV's speed is a curse, too. You only get some seconds of painting before it flies past. Add time-wasting countermeasures and the once-a-minute cooldown and you can see why it's only used for roadkills. But don't give up yet. With a smart team or friends on mics, ready to fire, the SUAV can work. This gadget suits recons camping far away from vehicles.

Oh, and a bonus: The SUAV has a souped-up onboard TUGS with a range of 45m. I guess you could clear an objective you're defending or pushing by circling with an SUAV? I really don't have any experience with this thing.

How to deal with Support's pesky gadgets: A guide

    Posted: 22 Dec 2019 09:46 AM PST

Support's gadgets can be frustrating to play against. Nobody likes dying to someone they can't see or shoot, but with these tips, support gadgets will be nothing more than a minor inconvenience.

The saying "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" is very true when playing against support gadgets.

    • Move before a support player makes you move. Mortars and airbursts are only good against stationary players with their limited ammo and slow travel times. If camping is your cup of tea, no worries. Just cycle between your favorite spots and you'll live long.
    • Watch your surroundings. Mortars and UCAVs make bright trails and tons of noise. You can tell if one is going to land nearby based on its trajectory.
    • Stay hidden: Consider using suppressors, smoke grenades, or the shadow field upgrade to be less noticeable to support players.

The UCAV: The most annoying of them all. The UCAV used to be my most-hated support gadget, but after trying a few new things, I now have very few issues with it and I think you will get the same results.

    • The UCAV flashes brightly and makes a loud buzz that can be noticed from afar. Once you know what to look for, you will see it before it sees you, so you can simply hide for a quick moment or take a hidden route, then carry on with your business 90% of the time. But, if you're playing in UCAV hell, avoid open areas, use vehicles as protection, and get off the map (use suppressors and the shadow perk).
    • Snipers counter UCAV users. The UCAV guy is the perfect sniper target: he must stand still for several seconds and reveal his location when he launches that flashing UCAV. Most UCAV players are too braindead to go behind cover before launching, too.
    • If you don't want to play Recon, use a sniper pistol. This might sound dumb at first, because pistols can't 1-hit kill at range, but hear me out. When you shoot an active UCAV user, you force them to choose between cancelling the UCAV and running, or dying to your next shot. You win either way. Use the .44 magnum, or the mare's leg if you don't have the magnum scope. This might be the one time in all of battlefield where the 40x mares leg is useful, as you'll be shooting stationary targets from far away.

The Mortar: The mortar, while more spammy than the UCAV, is only effective against stationary spotted players. Avoid being stationary or getting spotted and you're set.

Either always be on the move between different pieces of cover, or play stealthily with suppressors and the shadow perk (to stay off the mortar screen). You could watch the skies for mortar trails, but if you get into a gunfight you'll forget and get blown up. Just assume that a mortar is always coming whenever an enemy sees (spots) you.

If that's not enough, try changing your loadout:

    • Support: The "useless" MP-APS can actually be used like a mortar umbrella. Just point the camera straight up (right click) after deployment and you're safe to start camping. It is a bit finicky from my experience, though.
    • Assault: Use little med packs instead of big boxes. The little packs let you heal and run from mortars at the same time, while the big bags attract injured teammates and make you stationary--a mortar dream come true.
    • Recon: Use the MAV to completely shut them down, it's that simple. Stay out of bipod LMG range, and if they start using stingers, fly near walls or terrain to dodge locks.

So, that's all I've got to say. Hopefully these tips make your Battlefield more fun to play, even when players start using these annoying gadgets.
