BF 2042 needs more darker/grittier maps

    Posted: 23 Dec 2021 09:25 PM PST

So far I have been really enjoying the game but a lack of the "dark and gritty" theme behind 2042 is really lacking.

The exodus short film was beautiful in portraying the story of a grim future where the world is in turmoil. What happened to that theme? In the beginning of the clip Irish is walking through a flooded street that's littered with garbage. So what happened to that location? It would've made a great map like the Flood Zone map from BF4 where you can break a dam and flood the map.

I see this game took a lot of inspiration from MW 2019 and that's not a bad thing since it's a really good game with a great campaign that paints a dark story and continues it. But 2042 just lost that focus.

Hopefully we will see more maps that resemble the story behind 2042

    I am enjoying 2042...

    Posted: 23 Dec 2021 06:15 PM PST

TLDR: I like it, it has flaws, but it's worth the $29.99 I paid for it on PC (~ a month or so after release after 3-4 patches).

Some background: Started with 1942 on PC, been playing the series a long time, have 3-4k hours in BC2, BF3, BF4, BF1, BFV combined or so. So I am well aware of the series and their issues/successes.

This game is fun, I don't agree with everything it does, but I am having fun. And honestly, in our current climate, that's all that matters.

Disclaimer: I bought the game for $29.99 off the EGS sale ($10 coupon woo!). Didn't pre-order it, as pre-ordering is silly, so I didn't pay full MSRP (or greater). I also didn't experience the game with the netcode/server/combat issues (that they have patched multiple times now - and it still gives me issues sometimes). I exclusively play only conquest/PC. I am a pretty good player, my usual round will be 99% ground soldier, ~3/1 KD ratio with lots of revives/captures/flanks/etc. I know KD isn't everything, but it does symbolize I can shoot a digital gun with precision. I never camp unless it's warranted in the situation (holding a zone or waiting for squad to spawn on me).

Some pros and cons (not all, just off the top of my head):

    Pros:

    • Gun gameplay is fun and rewarding if you are good at it. But is very harsh if you have bad aim. In my opinion, this is how it should be.

    • The new PLUS (+ or t) system is simply amazing. I love how I can have an LMG, have a medium to long range set up, and also be able to CQ combat at a moments notice. Really good job with this. In my opinion, likely in the top 3 DICE gameplay additions as far as 'new' things go in the franchise.

    • I actually am enjoying specialists (downvote away!). I originally though there was just going to be a bunch of zip lining around constantly from everyone. Actually, I am seeing a fair amount of all of the specialists, including the revive and supply ones. So, maybe it isn't as bad?

    • I am enjoying the 128 player count with the map size. I haven't run into many bots...

    • I actually enjoy the new personalized scoreboard. I know I know...

    • The "Battlefield" moments are insane.

    • The new twister/big events actually are really well done. No performance issues for me on my PC when they are activated (3060ti/i7 10700k/running on 3rd gen NVMe).

    • The game isn't at all "next gen graphics", but I like the way it looks. Very Battlefield-ish.

    • Speaking of, the game runs great. 1440p, basically maxed out, getting ~100-120fps on a 144hz monitor. May dial down the visuals some so I can take advantage of my hz properly.

    • Absolutely NO crashes, hard crashes, or anything yet. Which is simply amazing in my eyes for this franchise.

    • I haven't come across cheaters yet, that I know of.

    Cons:

    • No audio chat functionality? You got to be kidding me. Toxicity isn't the problem, that's pure laziness. I can't communicate with my team or squad, especially with crossplay enabled. I can't join a PSN party playing on PC and vice versa. Fix this, my biggest complaint tbh.

    • Lack of content, from maps, weapons, handguns, throwables, equipment, etc., there's just not enough content here for most Battlefield fans, at $29.99, I am fine with it at the moment.

    • Too Much Spotting. For real, so many different ways to be spotted. JackFrags just released a great video on this yesterday or today.

    • No commander mode - I think with these huge maps, this would be insanely cool to have. A good commander can change the outcome of a game.

    • The tablet/call in mode needs a bit of work. Half the time it never initializes for me.

    • SMGs are supremely overpowered in CQ and short-medium distances. I shouldn't be getting out gunned with an LMG at medium distances with very good accuracy.

    • Way too many menus to access loadouts.

    • The start of a game is simply terrible. Getting dropped off in a helicopter 350m+ away from any points is just stupid. With NO ground vehicles, unless someone comes by and tries to be a good person in a HUMV. I try my hardest spawn in a 4-door vehicle so I can pick up the folks.

    • At distance combat needs work, specifically ground to ground. Damage drops off way too quickly for weapons that should be dealing decent damage with the right attachments. I have had MANY hit markers with no damage done to player or assists if the opposing player dies OR my LMG with heavy bullets/long barrel/~2-3x scope with bipod is simply weak (yeah right). I am assuming this is the netcode issue they are working on.

    • I understand that a different developer under the EA umbrella has taken over the vehicle physics/movement/controls. I get it, and they have tons of experience, but it is veryyyyyy different from past Battlefields, at least in BF1 and under (I think BFV they had the same folks). I am not much of a pilot, so not much to say here, but the ground vehicles (especially the fast ones) feel WAY to floaty and every time I hit a small rock, I almost explode. Make the vehicles tougher to non-combat situations.

    • This brings me to object detection... It is okay, but needs work. So many times I would be on a point defending and I am prone, I keep hitting invisible rocks/crates/metal objects that I am prone on, even though my gun/crosshairs are obviously clear of the obstruction.

    • Destruction is garbage (it wasn't good in BFV either - for the most part). I am assuming with 128 players, they had to cut back somewhere...

    • More maps please. These shouldn't be hard to make as the level design isn't all that impressive.

    • Most people look the same, though, this may be because the game is very new and people haven't had a chance to unlock costumes/sets/skins.
