    Seriously concerned with all these rumors that most of the community is going to be seriously disappointed by the setting of the next Battlefield

    Most of the rumors are indicating a near future setting, but I'm near certain that people aren't wanting that. It's 2020, near future is the 2030's or just about, and that could mean anything from robot pack-mules to space fighters at this point if military advancement and research is anything to go off of. This is not what most people are wanting this year, and I'm concerned DICE has completely lost touch with the community if these rumors are true.

    People want near past, not near future. Most fans I've spoken to want a modern setting, which they often describe as "Hummers, A-10's, Abrams tanks, and M-16's/M-4's". Hummers are a decade out of service, service branches are trying to get rid of the "aging" A-10's, the military is researching a replacement for the Abrams, and the M-4 completely replaced the M-16 in frontline service with a completely new platform likely to be phased in during the next decade. Near future would effectively see none of the elements of a modern shooter that fans want take center stage, and it would look like future tech just short of what was seen in CoD: Infinite Warfare– which bombed terribly in relative terms. It would be more like BF2142 than BF3/4, in other words, and fans who expect a modern setting will be seriously put off.

    This game needs to succeed. It's obviously too late in the development process to really change course on setting, but I'm just expressing my anxieties publicly and looking to see if I'm completely off base with my assessment. I love Battlefield and have a lot of good memories with the franchise, and hope to make many more, but if DICE can't make a game in touch with what their fans are wanting then they're going to lose me and many others to games that are up and coming, especially on console where large scale shooter alternatives are starting to crop up coming over from PC, such as Hell Let Loose and Enlisted (Supposedly Squad is coming as well, but they don't seem very energized in the console development). I really want Battlefield to succeed, but I'll always go where the good devs are who listen to their community and pay attention to their trends because it's good to be catered to; DICE needs to remember how to cater to their fans, and I hope they have this year.
