    Console player learning PC

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 07:07 AM PDT

Im thinking about starting a video series documenting my journey of learning to play on PC with a mouse and keyboard. I have just under 1200 hours in on console so I have a lot of experience with that version of the game. I know its late 2020 and the playerbase isn't huge for PC but I still want to do it because I think it would be fun as BF4 is my favorite of the series. Would anyone watch such a thing? My video style is usually just a live commentary talking about my thought process and tactics as I play.

Core takes more skill than HardCore when you look at it OBJECTIVELY

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 12:57 PM PDT

I had a few interesting conversations with 3 individuals here https://imgur.com/a/XlK6G9u . I do not mean to name/shame as that is against the rules however this is what convinced me to make this post and to explain in depth why HC has a smaller skill gap as they all had the wrong opinion on skill. I was a bit toxic on the reddit guy who DMd me and I dont want anyone to think I dislike HC players. If you enjoy HC enjoy HC.

That being said here is why HC takes less overall skill.

First lets define skill for the sake of argument. You cant have a debate and not have an equal understanding of the base definition of what you are arguing about. Here is the literal definition of skill https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/skill. This is what we can discuss when it comes to skill gap.

Things that take skill or have a skill requirement

    1. Aiming
    2. Positioning
    3. Map Knowledge
    4. Recoil control

    Things that are not skills

    1. Health Regen
    2. Spotting
    3. TTK or Dying Faster

Lets take a look at what each mode is like Core gives you 100 health a mini map and 3d spotting. HC gives you 60 health, no mini map and no spotting. Why then is core more skill based despite HC being harder to do well in? The reason lies in the fact that gunfights on core take more skill. They require better aim, tracking, positioning and recoil control. In core you have to position yourself better because being spotted in the open is a death sentence. In HC while you also need good positioning your aim can be worse as long as you can land the first round or 2 which lowers the amount of skill required to net a kill.

Lets take a few scenarios to explain it better.

Imagine you are playing a 1v1 on core. Both players have equal skill. Both players should have a roughly even score at the end of the match. This would be the expected outcome.

Now you have a 1v1 on core with 1 good player and 1 bad player. The good player should have a much higher score than the bad player. This would also be the expected outcome.

Now lets 1v1 on HC with 2 equally skilled players. Once again they will have the roughly same score which is to be expected.

Now we do the 1v1 on HC between a good player and a bad player. The good player will win however the bad player will do better in HC than he did in core because he can make up for his bad accuracy by getting lucky, using a high damage per shot weapon and getting a single hit etc. The good player will win by a smaller margin which means the skill gap is lower.

Lets take a look at competitive high skill gap games as another way of explaining why higher TTK = more skill.

First lets look at Overwatch (Even if you hate the game or its cartoony it doesnt change the fact that it requires a lot of skill). It requires you to play effectively as a team as well as to have good movement, positioning, accuracy, precision and tracking in order to effectively play the game. Go and search a top 500 plays 8 golds or whatever the videos are called. The top 500 usually does exceptionally well where a top 500 cod player for example wouldnt do nearly as well against 8 average cod players due to faster TTK.

Now lets look at CS/Valorant. These games also require a lot of skill to play despite having a faster TTK. Why do they get a TTK pass you may ask? They get a TTK pass because recoil is extremely difficult to master and if you spray you wont get any skills if you dont have a fair amount of time dedicated to practicing its pattern. You also cant move while shooting and maintain accuracy you have to master counter strafing etc. So while the TTK is low its very hard to shoot well in those games making up for the low TTK. The TTK doesnt matter as much if you cant even shoot the guy because your skill with recoil control doesnt exist.

Now lets look at Halo. Halo has always been regarded as a high skill gap game namely for its TTK. Go into a halo match vs someone who is bad at FPS games then redo the match on COD. You will beat them by a larger margin on halo than cod. In order to get kills in halo you have to have good accuracy and tracking needing 3+ bursts to the head with a BR. That means if 2 people go into a gunfight even if one guy gets a lucky burst off if he cant keep his aim accurate the better player will be able to mount a comeback and when the duel.

That being said just because HC is harder to do well in doesnt make it the more skill based game. In fact the fact that people are less consistent in HC shows that the skill gap is actually lower. Im not hating on HC and if you can provide definitive proof Im wrong Im willing to have my mind changed. That being said every good FPS player I know agrees with me and even Shroud whom I am sure many of you know agrees that higher TTK = more skill.

If you want to just say Im bad at HC Ill leave this here https://imgur.com/a/uWUQJDD this was my first game of TDM on that map ever and the first time I have played HC on PC. I was also playing late at night so I wasnt performing my best. Here are 2 videos grabbed from that game as well so you can see I have no problem running around killing people. These werent cherry picked from a bunch of games but rather the first game of HC I played. Also it was TDM because I couldnt find another HC server running in NA. https://youtu.be/DLS3YiCY9OI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_IZcu4RfU0
