A comprehensive guide on using the Scout Helicopter Posted: 06 Aug 2020 11:36 AM PDT This will be a detailed guide, so sit back, grab some water and let's dive in. YOUR LOADOUT Primary - Miniguns Secondary - Laser Guided Flares - ECM Specialty - Belt Feeder The mini guns are way better than the 25mms for quite a few reasons.
The trade off is that you need to have precise aim to really notice the benefits, which I will teach you later in this guide.
In the right hands all of these vehicles can kill you in a matter of seconds, the trick is the use cover and keep your distance, damage them continuously from range, and pair attacks with ground troops to ensure kills.
The biggest thing to note when using it is that you need to position yourself so that the flare is between you and the missile, otherwise it is likely to hit.
The other huge advantage of this is that you have access to the mini-map, which is crucial for identifying where enemies are compared to your proximity. MAPS Understanding which maps contain which vehicles and where they spawn is huge in being able to do well as a pilot, most maps have hard counters to the scout helicopter, and so in this guide I will teach you how to counter each of your counters, so you'll ultimately come out ahead. Speaking of maps, it's very important to go into advanced settings and make the map as big as you can, aswell as increase the visibility of enemy icons, and the distance in which it's set, all to maximum. Learn to use the map a lot and you will have an overall greater awareness of enemy positions. The other main thing about flying the scout helicopter is getting in the pilot seat to begin with, the most consistent way of doing this is by hopping into an empty server and learning where each of the scout helis spawn for both teams, walk there as soon as it's destroyed and hold square, the instant the chopper spawns you will be in the pilot seat, make sure to leave your squad when doing this in game so no one spawns on your location to do the same thing. POSITIONING Do not over extend, as a pilot you have immense survivability only when you keep in mind the skill level of the enemy teams players, the vehicles they're in, and the relation to where they are to your team. In other words go for strafe runs, the longer you stay behind enemy lines the less of a chance you have to leave alive. INFANTRY Ground troops are able to kill you very quickly, however if you implement a few of the following strategies you are virtually impervious to their attacks.
I cannot stress this enough, always stay moving, otherwise you will be picked off by an enemy elsewhere.
When approaching a nest of infantry, keep your distance, identify the AA mine and shoot it with your mini-guns. Often times the Anti Air mine will not be visible until it's too late, to avoid being hit preemptively release your ECM just before you reach the target, kill them quick and immediately return to cover. If you follow these strategies you will almost never die to a ground troop JETS - If your aim is good you can shoot jets out of the sky, if they're good they will simply fly above you and never give you the chance to do significant damage, the best strategy against them is survivability. The moment a jet pilot is targeting you, use you maneuverability to your advantage, check your map and identify where the jet is approaching from and turn sharply in the opposite direction, even with this action you will likely take significant damage. At this point head for the inside of an empty building, or run for a different location, by the time the jet has circled around you should be far enough away that he is unable to finish you off, eventually the jet will realize that he won't kill you and will leave you alone. ANTI AIR - As a pilot, this vehicle is your kryptonite, still there are ways to come out on top, some maps such as Hainan Resort only have one Anti Air, identify which flag the AA spawns at and fight hard to secure is for your team so the enemy does not acquire it. In most situations the enemy will have an Anti Air, you stand no chance in a head to head fight against even a terrible player within the AA, your best move is to pester him with the Laser Guided, and go in for the kill when he's being attacked by allies. If the AA driver is good you have another issue entirely, begin by keeping your distance and accept that he is to smart to be killed by your team, additionally constantly check the map to identify his position, often the driver will go deep into enemy lines and surprise attack you when he's close even if it means suicide. MAIN BATTLE TANK - Keep your distance, and pepper him with your laser guided, all it takes is one hit from the main gun and you're dead. LAV - The LAV's greatest weapon is the Tow missile, not only is it maneuverable, but has tremendous range and kills you in one hit, the key is to again key your distance and shoot him with laser guided. ATTACK BOATS - Other than the Anti Air, this vehicle is most likely to kill you, the moment you see the boat, run because he will likely chase you, again keep your distance and shoot with laser guided, only approach when you have a solid shot at finishing him off, when close shoot the repairman and then the infantry on the mini gun seats. Be aware often times the attack boats will roam in packs, if this is the case keep your distance period, if one is low on health the other will kill you. LIGHT VEHICLES - (ATV's, Small Boats, LMG Mounted Cars) Aslong as these vehicles are isolated they are an easy kill, even if the gunner doesn't miss a shot, your miniguns will significantly out damage them. ATTACK HELICOPTERS - In the hands of a good pilot the attack heli is a serious threat, skilled players will use their range against you, when paired with a gunner they can consistently kill you from across the map with the tow missile (Pilot) and TV missile (gunner) When you find yourself fighting said enemy, the most effective strategy is the keep moving and ignore them, even with perfect aim they will kill you. Even with high level movement you'll get hit, immediately take cover, land and repair just enough so that you're not on fire, and head towards spawn. It's very important to repair briefly and hop back in so you can take off without having to activiate the heli. Otherwise the attack chopper is basically a free kill, before approaching identify the skill level of your opponent. SCOUT HELICOPTERS - WHEN DEALING WITH 25mms scouts, with lock-ons, use cover to close the distance, when close pop ECM and laser him, quickly get behind cover before ground troops have a chance to lock on to you. When dealing with Pilots with the loadout I am recommending there is no straight counter, if their aim is better then yours fly backwards while approaching your spawn and sticking with your team. A straight dog fight against a more skilled pilot is instant death. THE REALITY - If you ingrain these tactics into your gameplay, you will do very well but this comes with the premise that you have really good aim, movement, and game sense which takes much time to develop, much of it comes down to practice, however there are quite a few pointers that I can give you to help you along your path. Keep in mind as a pilot crazy situations will arise, you will die, the important part is that you identify why you died, and how you can better avoid that the next time. Also make sure to fly sober, many situations give you less than a second to respond, otherwise you die, that is why you need to be fully with it when piloting. MOVEMENT - If you are an absolute beginner, I recommend that you learn the basics of flying on the Test Range, start by getting a feel for your heli in relation to objects, next hop into a game and begin practicing. There is no simple solution to this, it's just going to take time to improve. AIM - Unlike movement in Battlefield, your aim as a scout heli pilot can be improved a bunch with a few pointers. Remain calm, do not spam your mini guns, line up your shots with forwards momentum and pick off your target. Even from far range as long as your shot lines up you will kill the target very quickly. Another important thing to note is to keep your eyes on lookout for infantry, many players aren't always firing and so the only way to spot them is with your eyes, think of yourself as a hawk, the infantry your prey. Passed that your aim will take time to develop, remember keep distance, forwards momentum when engaging, and line up your shot before firing. These are the core tactics of a skilled scout helicopter pilot, please let me know if you have any questions, I'm happy to be of assistance, thankyou for sticking with the reading, and I hope that some of this helped.
