    [Other] Thank you Battlefield Community!

This is a weird post for me to make, simultaneously bittersweet and exciting. Hard to know what to lean into really :).

I am writing this little bookend post inspired by Dan's very nice exit as Battlefield community manager from last year. I think it was a great way to inform in a public and more personal way and let me reminisce at the same time.

Channeling Dan's spirit, I'm just blurting out the bittersweet part... I am moving on from DICE and Battlefield. My last day in the studio will be on March 3rd this year.

I've been with DICE and on Battlefield for ~11 years, in two stints, with the most recent one by far being the most rewarding. I remember fondly all the fun and awesome ideas we got to put forward and in players hands, and co-experience with the players starting with the Battlefield 4 Premium and the first incarnation of the CTE.

Looking back, I am really proud of the teams I've been part of, from Los Angeles to Stockholm, through failure and success. They've always been passionate, active and ready to help me make better games and experiences, dealing with my sometimes hyperactive tendencies and high-velocity direction and subsequent demands :).

I'm also really proud of what we achieved in terms of stifling the worst offender issues around the famed "Netcode" (networking, input latency, simulation rates/tickrate & related core gameplay quality) starting with said game. Which since we started is something that has been constantly improving in each title we've put out - nerd-yay!

Even cooler, our efforts spawned & instigated a new industry standard of sorts which increased the quality across many games (spot the HUD-networking icons in your fave game!).Since I live by the creed: No-one deserves to play with bad netcode - I love the fact that this, previously overlooked, highly technical, almost neglected and very niche area now is something players care about and actually value when looking at new titles... Times do change indeed!

To my DICE colleagues both in LA and Stockholm: I salute you! You are some of the most talented girls and guys I've had the pleasure of working with, and I know your coming games and releases are going to be awesome!

To play my old-geezer-game-dev role to it's fullest, I'll dispel some advice as well:

Keep on doing what really excites you, push for change take those take risks when needed and really embrace that passion of your fellow devs. Always aim to constantly improve, and you can't really fail. That's just part of this trek to reach higher and deliver so much better things - just be perseverant about it!And finally - It's cheesy, but "Players first" really does hit the mark.

Speaking of memories of the last decade or so - let me know your favorite memory in the comments below!I think my personal fave has to be the Community Map Project (Battlefield 4, CTE timeframe). Such a fun and really cool project to dream up and deliver, and in a very unheard of way (at least back then).

So, I am moving on - but, I am not going anywhere. I will very much be utilizing the same channels, same transparent development and communication in my new gig as soon as possible. I can't tell you any details yet, but rest assured you won't miss when I can :).

And of course, I am still going to play Battlefield (and lots of other games), I will just be a very vocal player instead of a very vocal dev going forwards!

[BF4] Battlefield 4 is still solid.

    Posted: 29 Jan 2020 11:24 AM PST

Nothing that hasn't been said yet but I just needed to write about this.

For whatever reasons, I don't play bf multiplayer as much as I used to. Today I booted up the game on my PS4 after what seemed like months and jumped into a decent looking conquest large server with classic rotation.

I had a great match defending C on Paracel Storm. Popping headshots with the m40 felt awesome and sneaking around enemies with a silenced 1911 when I was being overrun was great.

This topic deserves its own entire thread but I'm crossing my fingers so fucking bad for the next game to be more in line with what BF3 and BF4 had to offer. I just hate how streamlined and dumbed down BF1 and BFV turned out to be. I really miss how sandboxy everything felt, the steeper learning curves for weapons and vehicles, the more complex neon-looking HUD, the attachment system (dude I really miss this one), etc.

    Thoughts?

Ive played BF1 for quite a while now and thought it would be time for something new. Is BF5 worth the money or is it really as bad as many critics say

[BF4] Support Tank Mode Tactics -- Offensive Smoke + Suppressive Fire

    Posted: 29 Jan 2020 10:21 AM PST

So last night I joined a Locker Conquest on a team that was getting its ass handed to it...
-- Our team was cornered, and although I was trying to rank up my recon class (least favorite) our team was trapped. Cornered, nearly beat back to spawn.

My team for whatever reason was just throwing themselves into the hallway of bullets, and hiding behind corners just letting them click off tickets.

Frustrated with my team being content dying in the same spot....I decided to pull out my offensive Tank Support tactic to breakthrough

    Loadout
XM Smoke, Type 88 LMG (compensator, bipod and 4x Acog), Incendiary Grenades. Either IndirectFire or Perimeter Defense Upgrades -- I chose Perimeter for the added suppressive fire bonus.

Here is my advice: You can't shoot what you can't see. If you are pinned down by a cluster of team members, they are locked into position having pushed into the choke point as far as they can... THAT is their disadvantage.

They have chosen a position to click off kills. 99% of the time, they will remain where they are even if they can't see. They will respawn and go to the same damn spot....over and over because they think you are pinned down.

So how do you break a choke?

    1. Resupply at choke point for free points.
    2. Cross open-vector points cover to cover, with offensive smoke on enemy positions. Take cover Reload XM.
    3. Rush forward, dive for near cover and lay down a stream of LMG suppressive fire where the enemy is located. Endless trigger, dump and spray. The suppressive effect with make the enemies slowdown on their firing and take cover a bit longer.
    4. Resupply personal location.
    5. Offensive Smoke enemy positions AGAIN. Don't let the smoke clear -- EVER.
    6. Reload for Suppressive fire ---lay down a SOLID stream of bullets, full ammo dump. The enemy tends to freeze in location and can't shoot back because they don't see you.
    7. Grenade enemy positions and near corners.
    8. RINSE AND REPEAT.

Smoke, Suppressive fire, Rush, position, Smoke, suppressive fire.....

If your team knows what they are doing they will HELP YOU. By moving forward with you.

Smoke is one of the most useful gameplay mechanics ever invented. It's amazing to me that more players don't use offensive smoke to their benefits.

    --
We ended up pushing their team back into spawn. Another Support on my rando team-- pretty much copied my technique except he laid down XMAirBurst into the smoke...and we ended up with two offensive tanks, and two medics. We were nearly unstoppable. We broke 4 chokepoints wide open, and shifted the entire game.

    --

If you want to really dig the salt in. Once you have a team in their spawns....XMSmoke their spawns...repeat process from high cover.

[BF5/BF1] Somebody tell me what was the point of making this interface? It doesn't do anything, doesn't let me get into another BF quickly, it's pointless.

[BFV] Is the game designed to put all the skilled players on 1 team or is that just me?

    Posted: 28 Jan 2020 05:19 PM PST

I tried getting back into BFV because I spent money on it (big mistake) shortly after release.

My experience after 7 games: 90% of my deaths seemed to come from gold type 2As, or gold Jungle Carbines. Both usually carried by elite skins I saw in the armory for about $8 a piece. Not one game ended in a win, not one game was closer than 0-728, squad select showed only 1 or 2 players on my team in any given game had more than starting weapons equipped. I put over 1k hours into BF1 and loved it, this just seems like an unbalanced mess by comparison. That the number of glitches seems to rise exponentially with the number of player built objects on the map, or the constant packet loss in spite of my 2.5gig internet speed doesn't help.

[BF4] Game keeps crashing on me

    Posted: 28 Jan 2020 07:40 PM PST

I play on a ps4 pro. Internet is fine, every other game works fine, except this one. Game keeps crashing right away in every single server. Even when I run a system performance test, everything comes back positive. So what gives? Does anyone have any solutions to this BS? Really don't want to play BFV until a good team balance mechanic is implemented.
